       พรรษา เป็นคำภาษาบาลีว่า วัสสา ชาวพุทธตะวันตกจะคุ้นเคยกับคำนี้ดี ซึ่งถ้าเป็นภาษาอังกฤษทั่วไปอาจใช้คำว่า rain retreat

       ในช่วงฤดูฝน ๓ เดือน เป็นช่วงที่การเดินทางไปไหนมาไหนลำบากพระสงฆ์ที่เดินทางจาริกเพื่อแสวงหาโมกขธรรมและเทศนาสั่งสอนประชาชนอาจจะต้องเหยียบย่ำข้าวกล้า เพราะสังคมอินเดียสมัยนั้นก็มีอาชีพทำไร่ทำนาเช่นกัน ทำให้เป็นที่ครหานินทาของชาวบ้าน พระพุทธองค์จึงทรงบัญญัติว่า ในช่วง ๓ เดือนนี้พระภิกษุสงฆ์ไม่พึงเดินทางไปที่ไหนไกลๆ แต่ให้จำพรรษาอยู่ในที่เดียว จึงเป็นประเพณีที่พระสงฆ์ต้องอธิษฐานจำพรรษา ณ วัดใดวัดหนึ่งตลอด ๓ เดือน

       วันเข้าพรรษา ตรงกับแรม ๑ ค่ำ เดือน ๘ ชาวบ้านทั่วไปจะมีการตักบาตร ทำบุญ รักษาศีลและฟังธรรม ในชนบทวันนี้เป็นวันสำคัญมาก และโดยปกติจะมีผู้ไปทำบุญที่วัดมากกว่าวันอื่น ๆ และจะพบว่า หลายๆ ครอบครัวก็ที่ส่งบุตรหลานของตนเข้ามาบวชในช่วงเข้าพรรษาด้วย วันนี้จึงเป็นวันที่จะได้มาเยี่ยมเยียนบุตรหลานที่บวชอยู่ นำอาหารคาวหวานมาถวายที่วัดด้วย

       สำหรับพระภิกษุในระหว่างพรรษานี้ พระภิกษุสามเณรเมื่อออกจากวัดไปทำธุระแล้วจะต้องกลับเข้าวัดก่อนพลบค่ำและออกจากวัดได้ก็ต่อเมื่อรุ่งเช้าของวันใหม่ นับจากที่มีแสงสว่างตามธรรมชาติส่องพอที่จะเห็นลายมือของตนเองได้ก่อน หากมีความจำเป็นเร่งด่วนต้องเดินทางไปที่อื่นชั่วระยะหนึ่งก็ได้ เรียกว่า สัตตาหะ ซึ่งไปได้ไม่เกิน ๗ วัน  

       ทางสังคมเอง ก็มีการรณรงค์ให้คนลด ละ เลิกสิ่งเสพย์ติดทั้งหลาย เช่น สุรา บุหรี่ และสิ่งเสพย์ติดอื่นๆ โดยอาศัยการเริ่มต้นในวันนี้ ถือว่าเป็นที่การทำบุญและบำบัดตัวเองไปในตัว

       วันเข้าพรรษา จึงเป็นวันที่มีความหมายทางศาสนาและยังมีความหมายทางสังคมสำหรับวัดในชนบทอยู่มาก ดังนั้นรัฐบาลเองก็ให้ความสำคัญต่อวันนี้อยู่ไม่น้อย

Buddhist lent or full moon day of the year 2011

Wednesday, October 12 will be the end of this year’s Buddhist Lent, Thais call Wan Auk Pansaa, celebrated on the full moon night of the eleventh month of the year. This event is marked the “official” end of the rainy season, even though the weather might not necessarily cooperate.    

Many of lay people will be gathering at their local temples for paying their respects, make merit, do the Tak Bat Dhevo ceremony and place steamed rice wrapped in coconut palm leafs, called “kao tom hang”, and any other food into monks’ alms bowls. Other religious ceremonies will be also taken place at local temples of them.

Most  of Thailand has  three  distinct seasons  which  shade  into one another. These  are  the  rainy  season,  the cool dry season,  and  the hot dry season. The  lushness of the vegetation  is accounted  for by the rainy season which normally  begins in May and gets  into  full swing in July, climaxes  in September or October, and then peters  out  in November. Just because  it is called  the rainy  season,  does  not mean it rains all  the  time, nor even every day. What it does mean  is that  it rains heavily  on many days, most often  in the afternoon, but rarely  for more than an hour  or  two.

In Bangkok and  the Central Plains,  rain averages  about  200 mm monthly  from May  to October,  and  temperatures overage 24 C  to 32 C, from night to day.  In Chiang Mai (North of Thailand)in the some  period,  rain overages  160 mm  monthly and temperatures  range  from 23C  to 31C. The North-east  falls  roughly  into  the some weather pattern, with a shorter and lighter  rainy season.
